Your “enabler” is “making more than $100/mo. from writing.” Writing is fulfilling in many different ways — the “writing for hire” isn’t always the most joyful or fulfilling of those ways, but when someone values it enough to pay you for it, it sure beats digging ditches, doesn’t it?

I think most of us love writing as an act of communication, though, too — the real fulfillment from the act of writing (separate from the act of earning a living, which is both necessary and occasionally soul-satisfying, in and of itself) is from the meeting of minds we get between writer and reader. It’s a two way street, and we like to hear the other side of the conversation, too. When that’s missing, it’s just words on paper.

Fiction and poetry give us something a little different — they are playful. Sometimes, we are both writer and reader. Love it or hate it, we didn’t throw our imaginations into the cold and silent void of space. Money is never really the only thing, is it? Just gotta find the sweet spot where needs are met and soul is satisfied, and that’s not always easy to do.
