When I first started working with NLP, I was just thinking of it in terms of "finding gold-tipped needles in a haystack full of pins" - and then someone started referring to the output of my work as "machine learning" and "AI" and I was like, "Oh, f*** me, no - the stupid machine doesn't 'learn' a damned thing - it's just a fast sorter and a parrot that has to be constantly trained, but THANKS you jerks for giving the MACHINE ALL the credit." Ugh. Really made me feel more empathy for the teachers of the world.
