Well, now, I didn't say THAT.

I made a good living as a technical writer. But even when it is most definitely "about the money," no one is going to PAY YOU to write crap. So writing that IS about the money MUST offer solutions, solve problems, and provide guides. Or, in the case of fiction and poetry, it must tap into universal themes, emotions, and experiences and either make the reader feel seen or widen the reader's perspective.

Writing that is mere navel-gazing isn't worth a penny to most of us, and unfortunately, when it's too easy to self-publish and earn those pennies - no editorial oversight or commercial transaction at all - it becomes an unsatisfactory and unsatisfying thing that cannot be sustained, long term.
