True. Artists and writers really have to be thick-skinned. Not to belligerently NOT CARE WHAT ANYONE THINKS, but also not let it stop them from pursuing their own joy through creative expression. It's a tightrope, isn't it? There's a difference between what brings us joy and what's commercially viable TODAY. If we're so focused on the sale, the work can become soulless. If we don't care at all about the audience, the audience won't care about our work, either. And that's okay - has to be okay. Learning to find the sweet spot, where critics (primarily the INNER critic, really) can't tear us down is important.

There is no work of art or literature that is universally loved. There's the fact. And few are universally hated - even there, the artist may have accomplished their goal: making people think, making them talk, getting a visceral reaction out of them. If you're not accomplishing your own goals, not getting any joy out of the act of creation, maybe it's time to seek another outlet or take classes and hone your skills, but it's not because you're not "worthy."
