This was hard (emotionally) to read. I'm sorry for what you went through, and glad that you were able to repair your relationship with your father before he died. I know many parents who have this idea that the beatings they got as children turned them into upright adults, and they continue the practice of corporal punishment on their own children - well-meaning but terribly misguided.
