The thing about "writing as a career" or "making a living as a successful author" is that you can't just be "hopeful." It's work, like any other work. With a LOT of risk. If you have a full time job and start your career in your "spare time," or you have a partner who can support you while you write, that's awesome. Otherwise, the best way to feed yourself as a writer is to be a writer for hire. NOT a Medium writer, but a writer for a company that will hire you full time or a consultant who works for an agency that will keep you gainfully employed as close to full time as possible.
