The real answer to "why not" with #3? Guess who has all the firepower? Not your average 2nd amendment fanatic, that's for sure.

I don't pretend to have the answer, and I'm not sure I like your #1 and #2, either, but at least they ARE ideas, instead of just bemoaning the problem. That's kind of why the 1st amendment exists at all, right? Until the past 12 years or so, I saw the 1st amendment as ensuring our right to brainstorm ideas - good, bad, ridiculous - without fear of repercussion or being thrown into a dungeon by the government, while we're discussing ways to make it better. But no, we've squandered it on the right to say "fuck off."
