Seems to me that algorithms try too damned hard. Read my short story, here - Dealing with the Demon. It's not really about "demons." I wrote it in the very early 1990s (there were other parts, omitted here, written by others - it was meant to be part of a collaborative novel). It really is about those algorithms that hadn't yet been invented.
In the original, there was a woman addicted to online shopping. Another, to playing chess with a man in Russia (the Russian was actually a bot). My character was hooked on gaming and online moderation.
I think we writers stopped writing the novel once we realized we'd written ourselves into a situation we couldn't get out of, and the machine had won.
