Really. They should be giving you credit — if only they knew. If only they knew. ;)

I’m paying it forward. When I was 18, a friend who lived on Oahu took me hiking to Maunawili Falls. It was not a long hike, but some of it was ankle-deep mud, and there were kukui nuts underfoot much of the way, and the parts that weren’t sucking mud were icy mountain stream and pebble-hops. The falls were breathtakingly gorgeous, but also, the water was so cold it knocked the breath out of me as I dove in to wash the mud off — so cold it burned. I grumbled up and back.

I have regretted not being gracious enough to say thank you for that experience — I still grumble, when I’m being reluctant (or when there’s mud involved) but now I try harder to enjoy the moment and show appreciation for the fun.
