Plagiarism is "crap." Failure to run even a free grammar checker, or correct spelling of words underlined in Medium's built-in editor results in "crap." Not all writing is good; much of it struggles to be merely adequate. That does not make the WRITER "crap." But if they cannot take constructive criticism when given, or accept rejection from a publication and shop it around elsewhere or go back to the drawing board to improve it, then they're not a "writer" and shouldn't bother to call themselves such.

You are right; editors here are volunteers. They should be chosen with some care - and guided. And then they should be allowed to do the work, and supported in it.
