No dandelion wine for you!

That which we call a “weed,”
By any other name,
Grew sunward from a tiny seed,
And nourishes or poisons us
As any garden’s vegetable or flower
We choose, instead, to cultivate.

Bright spot of yellow in a salad,
Or flavor, mellow, in the summer wine —
That saffron nuisance tastes just fine.
You may think I’m awfully silly,
Cultivating daffodillies.
Grumble, spray them all you want —

But as you wilt my childhood wishes
Remember: they, too, are delicious.
