Never mind second-hand smoke; the real wonder of it is that we weren't all trapped in a burning airplane or building back then.
I still remember one teacher who smoked and left her Lucky Strikes in her desk, ripe for the pickins, because of course she couldn't - or didn't - lock the desk drawers against curious middle schoolers. The only saving grace was that Lucky Strikes sucked. (Who wouldn't prefer Kool to be ... cool?)
Part of why we see rehashes of old stories like this is (a) there are really only so many plots available; and (b) it costs less to develop a new take on a public domain story.
