I've always recommended that writers read their work aloud - dramatically, if possible! - not only for proofreading, but to catch those rough patches where the words just don't flow as smoothly as they ought to.

I once wrote a speech about how reading lights up areas of the brain, and how this has been studied using encephalography.

Before I actually gave that speech, I changed it to "brain scan." Less precise, but it got the point across without drawing attention to a word that's hard to say - especially when you're nervous. I'm not sure that text-to-speech can give you that, but it might be good for the first run!
