In FICTION, the equivalent is the literary vs “formulaic" genre fiction. Do you want to (maybe) produce one groundbreaking literary novel of lasting value (that won’t likely be realized until you’re dead) or churn out “bodice-ripper romance novels" once a month and pay your bills? It’s a valid choice, until you convince the literary novelist that she MUST write like James Patterson, or vice versa.
This, above all else, may be why I avoid (most 😉) writing groups and advice — self preservation.
You already know where your writing needs work (at least in English). I would not do so well in French or Italian. But your English is good enough that I can see you don’t need someone twisting your voice and still into a pretzel. You’re already better at it than so many writers. You need challenges — not lessons in dumbing it down.
