I'm always a bit torn on this. Sometimes we reciprocate. Sometimes, we pay it forward. Sometimes, we're just selfish. I think this is true for most of us, anyway, in varying proportions.

I have never wanted anyone to read my writing out of a sense of obligation or mere reciprocity. But it would be nice if they wanted to more often than they do, sometimes. And I know that I see notifications and make "read later" lists, but the definition of "later" is a vague sort of thing that occasionally fails to materialize.

People who NEVER reciprocate, though? Didn't we used to call those "users" (not to be confused with drug addicts)? ALL take and no give? I think they have to be especially special before I can be bothered with them. That includes most celebrities. If we are exchanging value (everyone's time has value) for value (some people's work product has MORE or LESS value to different people), that's a form of reciprocity. I don't keep score, really. I choose. And no one needs to worry that I'm just being "nice" in spending my time on them.
