I agree that when it comes to some of these cases, we've lost our collective minds. To me, it's all a matter of consent; no consent = rape, period.

"Sexting" is a whole different problem. It can be seriously damaging in its own right, but perhaps ought to be treated as aggravated defamation, not a "sex crime" if the subject of the photo is over 16 AND was not drugged, blackmailed, or coerced into posing for the photos. I think most states have some sort of exception to "statutory rape" statutes when the perpetrator and victim are close to the same age, but perhaps 16 and 19 are not close enough. I am not an expert on those laws.

We all judge. The hypocrisy is in not judging by the same standards to which we hold ourselves. And none of us should judge without evidence, but the media encourages us to do just that.

If it wasn't clear, though, I agree with you. I don't see them as anyone's knight in shining armor. Thing is, I doubt most people really do. It's just that they're happy to imagine rapists getting the extrajudicial punishment they think is coming to them. And only their fellow prisoners can mete that out; the law must satisfy itself with the law.

I don't say that's necessarily fair, nor is it always justice. I just think that's how it is.
