Disappointment is natural; throwing in the towel is the “suicide pact.” We desperately need election and campaign finance reform now — not in January 2024. We need all of us — whether we disagree on details and nuance, there are larger issues at stake, such as democracy itself. Oddly, a lot of people seem a whole lot more comfortable with authoritarian, dictatorial rule than with democratic socialism, and that’s alarming. But it also points to a need for improved education and (perhaps) some sensible limits on “free speech” (which, as a writer, I consider to be nearly sacred — but I can accept not being allowed to lie outright, on purpose, and not being allowed to yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater or a crowded campus).
